Darkness held me completely still, my breathing echoed, bouncing from wall to wall. Screams for help made my heart stop, and tightness formed in my chest. A child screamed and panic stricken, I ran blindly toward the sound. “Please tell me where you are!” I yelled, but I got no answer. The cries only grew louder, sending panic through me. “I’m coming!” I cried, as I searched for the voice in the dark. I ran faster and faster, gasping for air until I reached a white door, and the screams stopped. Silence froze me, petrifying me worse than the screams themselves. “Hello?” I repeated a few times, hoping for even just a whimper that would tell my aching heart that I wasn’t too late.
I could hear only the thud of my beating heart. Suddenly, one horrible long scream from the child pierced my ears, almost bringing me to my knees. I needed to get through that door, but fearglued me to the floor. A soft, familiar voice from the other side of the door spoke, sending to my core a desperate need to get through that door. “Nora, they need you.” Swallowing my fear, I slammed myself through the door, and braced myself for action. The walls of the room I entered were spattered with blood. And next to the small, lifeless body, sprawled on the white floor, another bloody child stood, faceless, holding my head in his hand.
